SCIENCES PO LAUNCHES ITS FIRST DOUBLE DEGREE IN AFRICA, WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF CAPE TOWN

Paris, 21 March 2025 — Sciences Po and the University of Cape Town (UCT) are strengthening their partnership with the launch of a dual Master’s degree. For Sciences Po, this marks the first dual degree with a university on the African continent, which is thus extending its academic footprint across all continents and further strengthening its academic commitment in Africa.

Signed during a visit of the UCT Vice-Chancellor to Sciences Po, the agreement aims to train experts capable of meeting global challenges in governance, public policy and sustainable urban development.

An Academic alliance of excellence

University of Cape Town and Sciences Po intensify 28 years of academic co-operation.

The dual degree covers two Masters programmes:
- Governance and International Relations: A partnership between the Paris School of International affairs (PSIA) and UCT’s Nelson Mandela School of Public Governance;
- Urban Studies: A partnership between Sciences Po’s Urban School and UCT’s African Centre for Cities.

Scheduled for January 2027, the first cohort will comprise approximately 20 students. The program aims to attract a diverse range of candidates, both socio-culturally and geographically.

Africa, a strategic priority for Sciences Po’s International development

For over 15 years, Sciences Po has made Africa a central pillar of its international development. Today, it is the French university that sends the most students to spend part of their studies in Africa, and one of the European institutions with 34 of the most active university partnerships on the continent. It also welcomes nearly 700 students of 46 African nationalities into its student community.

Luis Vassy, Sciences Po’s President: “With the signing of this dual degree, we have taken a decisive step forward, giving this collaboration a new dimension through a program of excellence in social sciences, at the crossroads of Europe and Africa”

Mosa Moshabela, UCT Vice-Chancellor: “In ratifying this double degree we are charting a new course, to create a sustainable future, by unleashing human potential for a fair and just society.”

At the signing ceremony South African Ambassador to France, His Exellency Nathi Mthethwa, warmly congratulated the Universities of Cape Town and Sciences Po, on the excellent partnership that has been strengthened on Human Rights Day in South Africa.
