Joint Press Release
14th March 2019
Sciences Po and Strathmore University announce a new partnership, launching a 5-year Bachelor and Master double degree programme. It is the first agreement signed by Sciences Po with a Kenyan university since the inauguration of Sciences Po’s office in Nairobi a year ago.
This programme will allow undergraduate students enrolled at Strathmore University to obtain a Bachelor’s degree from Strathmore University and a Master’s degree from Sciences Po in 5 years. It will provide students with the unique opportunity to experience different education systems and build professional networks across both continents. This type of programme has already been successfully established with other Sciences Po partners such as Johns Hopkins University (USA), Barnard College (USA) and Waseda University.
Beyond the double degree, Sciences Po and Strathmore University plan to strengthen the existing partnership through joint actions. This includes : increasing mobility between the two institutions thanks to an extended student and staff exchange agreement based on a strict reciprocity principle, integrating digital teaching and learning actions in Policy analysis at the Master’s level, and developing executive education programmes.
“We are very pleased to announce this partnership. We foresee the possibility of numerous collaborations with Strathmore University, for its diversity, vibrancy and global openness. The double degree that we have just signed joins the movement which is making Nairobi an East African university hub.” says Frédéric Mion, President, Sciences Po.
Organisation of Studies
The double degree programme will consist of a specific track where selected students spend their first 3 years at Strathmore University taking Bachelor-level courses and the following 2 years at Sciences Po taking Master-level courses. As such, it is an integrated Bachelor and Master’s programme in 5 years, compared to 6 years for a traditional Bachelor and Master’s trajectory at Strathmore University. Here, the 4th year credits are used twice to validate the last year of the Bachelor’s from Strathmore University and the first year of the Master’s at Sciences Po.
The double degree programme will be open to 3 different Strathmore University undergraduate programmes from the School of Humanities and Social Sciences and the School of Management and Commerce, and to 16 Sciences Po graduate programmes from the School of Management and Innovation, the School of Public Affairs and the School of International Affairs.
“International education is very key in the world we live in. This partnership allows both students and staff from Sciences Po and Strathmore University a rich opportunity to learn from each others culture. This will broaden their world views and ways of thinking as they interact with one another. Moreover, Sciences Po is key as it is an international research university, both selective and open onto the world, ranking among the finest institutions in the fields of humanities and social sciences” adds, Dr. Vincent Ogutu, Vice Chancellor Designate, Strathmore University.
Eligibility and Admission
The selection is made according to academic records starting from the 1st year at Strathmore University and a strong motivation to study at Sciences Po. The admitted student will then enrol at Sciences Po for a two-year period. Each academic year, Strathmore University will pre-select a cohort of first class students for potential admission to Sciences Po. Sciences Po will then proceed to evaluate the pre-selected applicants. The students of the double degree programme will pay tuition fees to the home university they are attending.
